“TERRITORIES THAT MATTER: GENDER, ART, AND ECOLOGY”

I will be a speaker at the International Conference: “Territories that Matter: Gender, Art and Ecology”, organized by Universidad Autónoma de Madrid, Centro de Arte y Naturaleza-Fundación Beulas (CDAN) and Ayuntamiento de Huesca, in the city of Huesca, Spain. On November 23rd and 24th 2018.

The aim of this conference is to explore the intersections between contemporary art, gender issues, and political ecology. Since the 1960s, influenced by Second-Wave Feminism and ecofeminist theories, a great number of artists, specially women artists, have sought to transcend the traditional identification of women with the earth in order to consider, from a larger perspective, the complex interactions between gender politics and environmental issues. In recent years, artistic practices committed to feminism and the protection of the environment have been enhanced with new contributions: moving beyond the debates of early ecofeminism, feminist political ecologists suggest gender is a crucial variable – in relation to class, race and other relevant dimensions of political ecological life – in constituting access to, control over, and knowledge of natural resources, thus underlining the interconnection between patriarchy, colonialism, capitalism and extractivism. In addition, the new challenges of climate change act as powerful reminder of the social responsibility of the artist and the role of artistic education in promoting environmental ethics, while queer ecology and animal rights movements help us understand the relation between heteronormativity and speciesm.

Very happy of being one of the choreographers and performers selected for the International Project “Territories of the Bodies”, commissioned by, and presented at, “CUMPLICIDADES” International Festival of Contemporary Dance and Performance, in Lisbon, Portugal. From March 10th to March 16th 2018.

The International Project is based on the idea of generating a greater dialogue between artists of the Mediterranean area, and creating a space where they can confront their individual aesthetics and universes, giving rise to a collaborative process between artists who meet for the first time. The 5 selected artists have created together, during a month of residency with AADK, in Blanca, Spain, a piece of 7 variations presented in 7 different locations during Cumplicidades Festival 2018.

I’ll be performing “You Are My Skin, Nicosia”, a site-specific outdoor performance, at Dance House, as part of “Urban Emptiness” Festival of Nicosia, Cyprus. From Dec 1st to Dec 8th 2017.

Urban Emptiness Nicosia is an artistic laboratory over 10 days in the city fabric of Nicosia, with artists from the US, Puerto Rico, Japan, Mexico, Belgium, UK, Holland, Catalonia/Spain, Italy, Switzerland, Germany, Greece and Cyprus.

The Festival, happening between 1-10 December 2017, explores the interconnection among walking and new media in digital and physical spaces.

The aim of the project is to generate collective experiences and documentation of the diverse processes within the urban landscapes contributing to the dialogues and practices of the Urban Emptiness Network, investigating silence and emptiness in contemporary cities, through parallel and simultaneous actions in New York, Brussels, Athens and in Edinburgh.

Collaborative creation and decision-making, open dialogues of the experiences, and documentation of the process are crucial for it prompts critical thinking about aesthetic experiences in relation to our everyday life.

By generating transversal dialogical encounters with participants we root the aesthetic practice on relationships-relations; among each other and with the space we transit and inhabit as an ever changing dynamic.

Focusing on emptiness-silences-sounds-spaces-movements, this Festival consists of artistic practice and research based outcomes relating to an interdisciplinary approach to the relationships between body and movements, sounds and silences, digital and physical spaces.

Special attention will be placed on the exploration of the city of Nicosia which draws our attention to people’s everyday actions and negotiations of city spaces revealing the potentiality of space with walking explorations and performances.

Outcomes for the audio-visual part of the project are an exhibition of video, digital mapping and walking related indoor installations, documented walks through Nicosia, simultaneously happening in other cities, together with workshops, presentations of work in progress by art students of New York, Brussels and Athens and a round table.

Urban Emptiness Nicosia organizers are the Urban Emptiness Network, CSCA Lab at the European University of Cyprus and Dance Gate Lefkosia.
Curators: Geert Vermeire and Sophia Hadjipapa-Gee in collaboration with Arianna Economou.

I’ll be a speaker at the International Conference: “Pop Moves: Celebrating the Popular, Practicing the Urban”, organised by University of East London, Stratford Square Campus, Sat Nov 18th 2017, from 9:45 am to 6:30 pm.

As part of their ten-year anniversary celebrations, The PoP [Performances of the Popular] Moves committee, in partnership with the CPAD research group at the University of East London, invites you to celebrate our annual conference. The conference engages with intersections between popular practices and the Urban: the city as a space where culture is created, represented and disputed.

Questions considered include:

What are the risks and opportunities that Urban environments provide for the emergence, spread and survival of popular practices?
How do notions of hybridity and cultural exchange operate between the Urban and the popular?
How does cultural memory intersect with popular practice in city environments?
What are the representations of city and bodies on screen?

I am one of the selected artists for “ENGAGE”: Artistic and Social Research Residency, curated by Viafarini DOCVA Foundation, in collaboration with the Municipality of Milan, at Fabbrica del Vapore, Milan, Italy, from Oct 11th to Oct 20th 2017.

ENGAGE is a training and research program, curated by Viafarini in collaboration with Sunugal, addressed to Italian and international artists, inviting them to spend a period of one week residency / workshop in Milan between 11 – 20 October 2017, in dialog with local social and creative mediators, aiming at researching and experimenting innovative ways of interaction between art practices and social sphere. The Public School will gather in Milan 20 artists whose practice implies interaction with local communities; research on contemporary collective imaginaries; analysis of the implications of great changes under way from an artistic as well as social, political and anthropological point of view. The selection took into account the ability of the artists to foster, through their practices, communication between diverse fields of knowledge: from science to religion, from economy to politics, so as to overstep the self-reference of art-based discourse, aiming towards the creation of alternative models of public action. During the School we will collectively discuss in depth strategies capable of making visible and intervening in issue linked to transcultural dialogue and social and urban exclusion and vulnerability such as: gender oppression; racism and xenophobia; discrimination and oppression based on religious belonging.
